2015 Hugo Awards Best Graphic Story: Reviewing Sex Criminals

Well this one definitely captured the “graphic” part of graphic story.

Sex Criminals Volume 1: One Weird Trick, written by Matt Fraction, art by Chip Zdarsky (Image Comics)

We’ve all played the game. If you could have any super power what would you choose? At what price?

This graphic novel is based on the idea that there are people who can stop time by orgasming. It’s a neat premise and even seems like it could be a fun premise. Instead of fun though the story teller went down the path of the dark knight with angst, psychosis, shallowness of feeling, and moments of shear stupidity. I mean really, if you could stop time what would you do with it? Rob banks? Why bother? Seriously, the possibilities are amazing and they’re robbing banks?

Maybe this is just me never having understood the dark super-hero tale. Maybe this is just me preferring Phil Foglio to grittier whatnots.

It’s an interesting premise, a well told story with some niches of real potential. I enjoyed it, especially the kegel joke, but overall I would only recommend it with a shrug and that to a small subset of people. Would I put a Hugo on its cover? No.
